Playing: January 16 - February 8
By: Noel Coward
Directed by: D. Michael Heywood
Set in 1925, two couples, Julia and Fred and Willy and Jane, are happily married and the best of friends. However, Julia and Jane are becoming bored so when a postcard arrives with news of an imminent visit from Maurice, a handsome Frenchman carrying strong ties from the pasts of both Julia and Jane, they begin to plan their adventure into infidelity.
Director's Note: Noel Coward wrote “Fallen Angels” in his mid-20s as part of a prolific series including more frequently revived pieces such as “Hay Fever,” “Private Lives” and “Blithe Spirit.” The play epitomizes Coward's shift from social commentary to light comedy, at which he was the most successful ever. “Fallen Angels” was largely overlooked until Coward revised it for a 1950s production on Broadway that substantially enhanced the role of Saunders-Jasmine to be played by Nancy Walker. It has been great fun to direct that version featuring some Slocum House veterans along with first-timers Jan and David Clay.
